We are sad to report the sudden passing of Michael Walton, the founder and prime mover of the Coney Island Challenge. Mick, as he was known to all, was a wonderful father and husband. He gave everything he had to his family and friends and he leaves a massive hole not only within his family and its business, but also in the Strandhill community. His contribution to St Anne’s Parish life and community activities was incalculable. He conceived the idea of the Coney Island Challenge to help raise funds for restoration work on the church of which he was a dedicated member. His vision and energy was such that the Coney Island Challenge quickly became established as a feature in the Strandhill calendar and indeed in a wider set of running events in the whole country.

Mick was above all our friend and it was always a pleasure to be in his company—which usually meant you ended up with something to do as a result! But no one minded as he was always prepared to do more work than anyone else.

The family that he embraced in St Anne’s Parish is devastated by his loss. The fact that St John’s Cathedral was full for his funeral was a real testament to how well he was liked and respected. His immediate family are in our thoughts and prayers now, and will be in the future. Mick, you will always be remembered.
